Chasing Waterfalls: My Favorite Spots Around the Kootenays
May 29, 2025Weekend adventures are my therapy — but they don’t have to break the bank. Living in the Kootenays means you can go from town to mountain to lake in under an hour. Here’s how I plan my local escapes without spending too much:
-
Stay close, go deep: Nelson, Kaslo, New Denver, Slocan, Creston… there’s so much beauty nearby, no need to go far.
-
Bring your own food: I always pack snacks, a thermos, and sometimes even a little camp stove. Eating with a view = priceless.
-
Sleep smart: Campgrounds, forest rec sites, or car camping with lakefront views? Yes please.
-
Keep it simple: Paddleboarding, short hikes, waterfall hunting, or chilling with a book by the lake.
-
Split & share: Share gas, gear, or food with friends — more fun, less cost.
You don’t need luxury to feel recharged. Around here, all you need is a good jacket, a full thermos, and a sense of wonder.
